Can Macs get viruses?

Mac computers can suffer from viruses or other malware attacks. But the likelihood is smaller than with a Windows PC, as there’s less malware directed at Macs.

Windows is now more secure than ever, and with Mac ownership on the up, hackers have more reason to target Apple. If malware strikes, OS X has ways to stop it spreading, but Mac users can still face a range of online threats, including spam and phishing emails, browser vulnerabilities and ID theft.

Do Macs need security software?

Though virus attacks are rarer, Mac users can become victim to Trojan malware and phishing fraud. Macs have built-in security measures such as a firewall to block online attacks, but they don’t come with antivirus software. However, there’s plenty of paid-for and free security software for you to choose from.

Phishing is an online scam in which criminals create fake websites that look like they belong to genuine companies in order to lift your personal information.Banks will never directly email you for such information, so delete any emails claiming to be from your bank.

Safari’s anti-phishing technology helps protect you by detecting fraudulent websites and showing you a warning. But dedicated security tools can do a better job of guarding against phishing attacks.
